Subject Leader - Mr Croot
English is at the heart of the curriculum at Forefield Junior School, it gives us a sense of identity and allows us to drive our strong rooted relationships amongst our wider school community, reflecting our culturally rich and diverse curriculum. We have designed our curriculum to help pupils gain lifelong skills and attributes. A high-quality education in English allows our pupils to speak and write fluently so that they can communicate their ideas and emotions to others.
Through reading in particular, pupils have a chance to develop culturally, emotionally, intellectually, socially and spiritually; we have a fabulous library bursting with books, where pupils enjoy spending time. Literature and reading, especially, play a key role across the curriculum, enabling pupils to acquire knowledge and to build on what they already know.
Teachers reinforce an expectation that all pupils are capable of achieving high standards in English. Teaching is underpinned by using high quality texts and high quality examples from the teacher which focus on the skills to be taught. These texts are then analysed in depth with the children in order for them to learn and apply those skills. Grammar and punctuation skills are practised and consolidated until all children have a firm understanding of how to apply them to their own work.
